Most people are now very familiar with Citi's Economic Surprise Index as it frequently cited in reports or in the financial press. What doesn't get cited nearly as much is the Citi Inflation Surprise Index. It is similar to the Economic Surprise Index except its a monthly indicator not a daily indicator and it focuses on inflation statistics.
Looking through the charts it is obvious that all around the world the current trend is deflationary, rather than, inflationary surprises.....
That is except for the usually deflationary Japan!
